Support FetchDog Overview

Support FetchDog enables help desks, IT departments, software developers and other support providers to detect and repair software errors on a local or remote PC, by allowing them to retrieve the exact configuration state of that computer.

The Windows operating system consists of different configuration elements such as DLL files, INI files and Registry settings. Software errors usually occur when one of these elements is missing or has been changed. One of the greatest challenges facing support providers is to determine which element is causing the errors. Since support providers do not usually have physical access to the faulty computer, and the user on the other side is often inexperienced, the challenge becomes even greater. To make it worse, the average software application depends on hundreds of these configuration elements, making it harder than finding a needle in a haystack.

Support FetchDog answers this challenge by allowing support providers to examine a remote or local PC, and determine which configuration elements are missing or different than expected. It does that without any pre-installed software on the user’s computer and with minimal effort from the supported user. Unlike other products, it works asynchronously, not requiring the support provider and user to remain online or on the phone. What makes Support FetchDog special is its ability to create small programs, called "Configuration Fetchers", which can easily be distributed by E-mail or on the Web. When a user runs one of these small programs, it generates a configuration report and sends it back to the support provider by E-mail.

Configuration Fetchers are highly customizable, allowing you to specify how they will interact with the user and which information they should retrieve. They are able to retrieve system information, file information, Registry information and more, covering the entire spectrum of configuration elements that are vulnerable to errors. You can also specify which values you expect to find on the remote computer and be notified if the actual values do not match.

Support FetchDog substantially reduces the complexity of identifying and repairing software errors which support providers face every day.

Who should use Support FetchDog?
Anyone that needs to support local or remote Windows users, will find Support FetchDog a must-have tool. It was specifically designed to answer the needs of:

  • Help desks (Internal & External)
  • IT departments
  • Software developers

Why use it?
Support FetchDog is remote/local software diagnostic tool that introduces a clean, powerful and ground breaking solution to a complex problem that has been around since the earliest version of Microsoft Windows. Please read below and see what makes Support FetchDog so great.

  • Allows support providers to examine a remote or local PC, and determine which configuration elements are missing or different than expected. Includes the ability to retrieve and analyze system information, file information, Registry information and much more.
  • Support FetchDog does not require any pre-installed software on the supported users' computer. You can support any Windows 95/98/NT/2000/Me user, even if they have a clean installation of the OS.
  • Unlike other products, Support FetchDog works asynchronously, not requiring the support provider and user to remain online or on the phone.
  • No technical experience is required from the supported user. All the user has to do is run a small program (Configuration Fetcher) that you created for him using Support FetchDog. The Configuration Fetcher takes care of everything including sending back the configuration report via E-mail. See Sample Configuration Fetchers for a real-world demo.

Summary
Support FetchDog saves you countless frustrating hours, trying to figure out how your customer's or user's PC is configured.

Instead of guessing what went wrong or asking the user to perform complex checks, you simply send him Configuration Fetcher and receive all the information you need after a few minutes. There is just no cleaner and more reliable way of doing that.

Key Features
  • The ability to retrieve system information from a remote PC including operating system type, processor speed, screen resolution, memory & disk size and much more. This allows for a quick and efficient compatibility check, making sure the minimum requirements for the supported software, are met.
  • The ability to retrieve complex file information including attributes like file size, file date, file time, file version and more. These values can also be compared against pre-defined values that you specify. This powerful feature allows you to quickly identify problems like outdated DLL files, unregistered OCX files and missing (or wrongly configured) configuration files.
  • The ability to retrieve complex Registry information and compare it against your own pre-defined settings. This allows you to quickly identify configuration errors.
  • Support FetchDog includes support for Custom Fetchers. Custom Fetchers allow you to retrieve information, that could not be retrieved using the standard features (described above). Custom Fetchers are DLL files that can be "plugged-in" to a Configuration Fetcher.

Sample Configuration Fetchers
Below you will find a few Configuration Fetchers we have created for demo purposes. You can simply download and run them to see how they work. You don't have to have Support FetchDog installed. Each Configuration Fetcher is about 108kb in size.
simple.exe - This is a simple Configuration Fetcher that retrieves system information only. It does not prompt the user to e-mail the configuration report back to the support provider.
simple_withemail.exe - Similar to the Configuration Fetcher above only it does prompt the user to e-mail the configuration report back to the support provider.
files_sample.exe - Retrieves both system information and file information. Information about both COMCTL32.DLL and COMDLG32.DLL is retrieved including date, size and file version. In this Configuration Fetcher the actual values are NOT compared against any pre-defined values. The contents of the  SYSTEM.INI file is also retrieved.
reg_sample.exe - Retrieves both system information and Registry information. Two Registry keys are retrieved. The first provides the list of programs that run when Windows starts. The 2nd returns Internet Explorer's version number (if installed).
